Jose Couso was a Spanish journalist murdered by an American Abrams tank on April 8, 2003 on his hotel balcon
y while filming that tank sitting on a bridge in Baghdad. I attended a video screening tonight of a documentary regarding this incident presented by Jose's brother Javier and his translator James Hollander. The film, by Telecinco out of Spain was very enlightening as to how someone could make a claim of "murder" in a war zone, and the evidence is compelling. I won't go into complete details here, but suffice is to say that Jose was in a known journalists' hotel, that the tank waited 10 minutes for permission to shoot on the hotel, and that there is absolutely no corroborating evidence supporting the Americans claims that they were fired upon. If they were so concerned, why were they on a bridge, a completely open and dangerous target? If it's a war zone, and completely confusing, why admit they waited for permission for 10 minutes to shoot? If they were being fired upon by a sniper, as they claimed, why not follow their own protocol and shoot back with machine guns, and not the full force of the tank? If their sites are so good, with the ability to see 2.5 miles out, day or night, how can they claim to see binoculars, but not the multiple very large video cameras? The most damning information of all? That two other independent, unembedded media sites were also hit in the previous two hours. Javier makes an excellent case that the Americans learned from their mistakes in Vietnam--that the battle isn't just fought on the battlefield but also in the minds of the Americans through the media. We live in an age where the media is controlled by 5 conglomerations--all powerful corporations interested in protecting their power. These guys are all in bed with Washington and are proof that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The two year anniversary of Jose's death is approaching, and its important that we all demand a true and free media. The best example of this in the United States right now is Democracy Now, a completely independent news organization headed by one of my heroes, Amy Goodman. Amy interviewed Javier and James on March 23, and that can be heard here: http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/23/1455244&mode=thread&tid=25. Democracy Now's main website is www.democracynow.org, and more info on Jose can be found at www.josecouso.info.
