The Land of Bob

This is my friend Vince with his six-month-old "found" object, a bowling ball named "Bob," along with his three-month-old "found" pet, a female cat named "Bob."

Bob's a great name in a pinch. A former employee of mine would answer Bob to everything.  "Who's that guy?" or "Who left this package?" or "What's the name of the 34th president?" all were met with the same exclamation and smirk, "BOB!"

A former boss at a record store named all of the store plants Bob. "Have you watered Bob yet?" meaning individually, or all at once, the various potted and hanging plants littering the store.

I like the simplicity of it, and can't help but notice that all three of these "Bob"sters were (are) very intelligent, so I think its more a matter of laziness than intelligence. Because I'm lazy, I'm thinking of using this same shorthand in all of my dealings, as it would probably take a lot of the pressure out of the millions of questions we ask and answer daily.

• "How are you?" BOB!
• "Credit or debit?" BOB!
• "What did you do last night?" BOB!
• "How much did that cost?" BOB!
• "Who would make a better president than our current president?" (any)BOB!

Gay Teen Valentine's Dance

Thanks to my participation at Lambert House, (a safe spot for gay kids to hang out and be themselves here in Seattle), I was able to attend a Gay Teen Valentine's Dance. One youth in particular worked tirelessly to organize this event (shown in drag in the blue dress), along with other gay groups in the area. This isn't the kind of thing you could see at a public school in this age of arch-conservatism (I get ill just writing that word). Anyone who doesn't belong to the mainstream in this country knows how difficult these types of Hallmark holidays can be, and I was honored to be able to attend the dance and take some photos.

Because these are gay youth I am not posting any photos showing faces. It's not my place to out anyone, especially if they are under the age of 18.

Golden Gardens Off-Leash

This is Golden Gardens off-leash dog park in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Dogs tussle and run, neighbors talk, and a wooded trail leads owners and dogs out of the off-leash area to great views of Puget Sound.

Beautiful Biking Weather

The weather has been absolutely beautiful in the Pacific NW this year (much to the chagrin of the skiiers and snowboarders), but its perfect biking weather. Approximately 4000-5000 people per day use their bikes to commute to work in Seattle (and many thousands more use it for recreation) but we have a serious lack of bike lanes. But we do have one jewel-the Burke Gilman trail. Built on an old train path, it traverses from Redmond around Lake Washington and well into Seattle (Burke-Gilman trail: http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/BurkeGilman/bgtrail.htm).
